HC Deb 07 March 1940 vol 358 cc566-7
63. Mr. J. J. Davidson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, as a step towards war economy, His Majesty's Government intend to introduce legislation for the purpose of reducing political, judicial and hereditary pensions?

Sir J. Simon

No, Sir.

Mr. Davidson

Is the Chancellor aware that there is growing public resentment against excessive pensions during a time of national distress? Is he further aware that limiting legislation for the period of the war would be welcomed in the country generally?

Sir J. Simon

I think, as I said in answer to a similar Question before, that we must have regard to what has been undertaken publicly and by Act of Parliament towards those who are entitled to a pension.

Mr. Davidson

I give notice that I will raise this Question at the first available opportunity.
