HC Deb 05 March 1940 vol 358 cc205-6
48. Mr. Loftus

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that there is a wide discrepancy between official American pre-war estimates of British dollar assets and the amount of such assets declared since the war; and whether he intends to cause investigations to be made into this discrepancy?

Sir J. Simon

I do not think that it would be in the public interest to publish the amount of British dollar assets which have been declared. Should instances of evasion on the part of British holders come to light, they will be severely dealt with, but in saying this I must not be taken as in any way confirming the suggestion in the first part of my hon. Friend's Question.
