HC Deb 04 March 1940 vol 358 c12
28. Mr. Roland Robinson

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will now reconsider the whole question of granting some concession in regard to the rate of postage on parcels sent to the troops overseas?

The Postmaster-General (Major Tryon)

I regret that I can add nothing to the answer given to a Question on this subject asked by the hon. Member for Normanton (Mr. T. Smith) on 30th January.

Mr. Robinson

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that a very large proportion of the money spent on comforts for the troops is used for postage, and will he reconsider the matter in view of the widespread dissatisfaction throughout the country?

Major Tryon

I do not think the hon. Gentleman is aware of the very large reductions that I made some time ago. The rates compare favourably with those in force in the last war and are based on the calculation of no profits whatever.

Mr. E. J. Williams

Does the reduction apply to parcels as well as letters?

Major Tryon

We are talking about parcels. The Question relates to parcels.
