HC Deb 19 June 1940 vol 362 cc153-4
33. Mr. James Griffiths

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour what measures are being taken, in the factories and workshops under his control, to care for the health and welfare of the young persons employed at these places; and, in particular, the increasing number of young women in employment?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Assheton)

Detailed measures for the health and welfare of persons employed at factories are required under the Factory Acts. These are supplemented to a considerable extent by voluntary action by employers and others, and my right hon. Friend is developing a special organisation, which includes a central Factory and Welfare Advisory Board, for promoting, with the assistance of the Factory Inspectors and other local officers, further action for the welfare of the employés outside as well as inside the factory. My right hon. Friend was assured yesterday of the support of a large number of voluntary organisations which are interested in this matter.
