§ 24. Mr. Glenvil Hallasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether it is the intention of the Government to take over the control of the Women's Auxiliary Service?
§ The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Peake)The organisation calling itself the "Women's Auxiliary Service" is an entirely unofficial body which has no connection with any Government service, and my right hon. Friend knows of no suggestion that the Government should take any responsibility for it or utilise its services in any way.
§ Mr. HallIs the hon. Member aware that I am not making any suggestion of that kind? I am asking whether the Government will take control of the organisation, in view of the fact that it is controlled by Miss Mary Allen, who masquerades in semi-masculine attire and is a known Fascist?
§ Mr. PeakeThe lady whom the hon. Member has mentioned has directed attention to herself in various ways, and she has not escaped the eye of the authorities. That is the reason for the answer I have given, that the Government have no intention of taking over this Women's Auxiliary Service.
§ Mr. PeakeIt is extremely doubtful whether this so-called organisation has any corporate existence at the present time.
§ Sir William DavisonIs it not very undesirable in times such as these that any unauthorised body should be allowed to proceed?
§ Sir W. DavisonOught it not to be closed down, because it is likely to cause confusion?
