HC Deb 12 June 1940 vol 361 c1247
12. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will pay particular attention to the extension of education in Nigeria; what action he proposes to take to meet the particular grievances among the teachers in Nigeria; and whether he proposes to.establish compulsory education in that Colony?

Mr. George Hall

Yes, Sir. The grievances of mission teachers concerning their conditions of service are receiving active and sympathetic consideration by the Government of Nigeria, with a view to effecting some improvement. As regards the last part of the Question, my hon. Friend is aware of the difficulties of introducing compulsory education in Nigeria. When, however, funds become available under the new Colonial Development Act, an extension of education facilities will be undertaken as rapidly as circumstances permit.

Mr. Sorensen

Has the number of children receiving education grown in recent years or diminished?

Mr. Hall

If my hon. Friend will put that Question on the Paper I will endeavour to give him the answer.
