HC Deb 25 July 1940 vol 363 c969
39. Sir H. Williams

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to the activity of propagandist societies in the direction of exploiting the war for the purpose of suppressing the particular forms of amusements of which they are not addicts; and will he continue to resist this form of political exploitation?

Sir J. Anderson

I agree with my hon. Friend that the Government's emergency powers should be used only for the purpose of securing the defence of the Realm and the efficient prosecution of the war, and not for the purpose of effecting changes in the law which may be advocated on other grounds.
