HC Deb 18 July 1940 vol 363 cc367-8
1. Mr. Isaacs

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons transferred by the Employment Exchanges from the printing industry into munitions production since 1st June up to the most convenient later date?

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Bevin)

Nine hundred and thirty-five printing trade operatives were placed on munition work through the Employment Exchanges in the period of rather more than three weeks between the date on which the special transference scheme for printing operatives came into operation on 17th June, and 11th July.

Mr. Isaacs

Are there still opportunities for other men of this capacity to be enrolled?

Mr. Bevin

Certainly.

Mr. J. J. Davidson

Does this apply to the country as a whole?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Robert Gibson

Could my right hon. Friend give the figures for Scotland, as there is extreme unemployment among printers there?

Mr. Bevin

Perhaps my hon. Friend will put that question on the Paper.
