HC Deb 30 January 1940 vol 356 c965
37. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the method of delivering petrol in bulk to retailers is not in accordance with the Weights and Measures Acts and gives no guarantee of correctness of quantity; and will he consider the advisability of compelling all vendors of bulk spirit to use an approved flow-meter in a manner similar to that imposed upon retailers?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Major Lloyd George)

Sales of petrol in quantities greater than 23 gallons are not subject to the Weights and Measures Acts and Regulations. The measurement of bulk quantities to retailers presents special technical and administrative difficulties the investigation of which had been started before the war, but is now necessarily suspended. I have no reason to think that the method commonly used does not afford purchasers a reasonably accurate measurement of the quantity delivered.

Mr. Morrison

If I bring to the hon. and gallant Gentleman's attention cases in which there is reason to think the quantity alleged to be delivered was not delivered, will he inquire into the matter?

Major Lloyd George

Certainly.
