§ 49. Sir J. Leechasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, as the collection by local authorities has resulted in less than 35,000 persons in Great Britain paying the annual licence for displaying armorial bearings, he will invite all local authorities to enforce the payment of this duty by those liable but who do not pay, so that the proceeds may relieve the ratepayer, or, alternatively, will he retrieve to the Exchequer the right to collect the duty and credit the proceeds to the national revenue?
§ Sir J. SimonThe local authorities who administer the Armorial Bearings Licence Duty in England and Wales and receive the revenue from it are not under my control, and I have no information as to the number of persons who are liable to pay the duty. In these circumstances I am not disposed to adopt the alternative suggestion of my hon. Friend.
