HC Deb 25 January 1940 vol 356 cc774-5
56. Mr. David Adams

asked the Home Secretary whether he will give particulars of ways in which the Factory Act regulating the hours and conditions of the employment of young persons and females has been relaxed in its application since the outbreak of war; how many factory inspectors have been called to the colours; and whether their places have been filled by other fully qualified and experienced persons?

Sir J. Anderson

As regards the first part of the Question I would ask the hon. Member to await the report which, as announced last week, I hope to issue early next month. Out of a staff of over 300 inspectors, 13 have been called to the colours and 13 temporary appointments have been or are being made.

Mr. Adams

I take it these temporary appointments are of fully qualified persons?

Sir J. Anderson

It will be realised that one cannot expect to get persons appointed temporarily of the same standard as regards qualifications as fully-trained staff, but we are doing the best we can to secure people with the right sort of experience.
