HC Deb 18 January 1940 vol 356 c198
13. Mr. Thurtle

asked the Minister of Labour whether it is possible for an arrangement to be made, whereby, in a family with four or more sons eligible for service in the Army, at least one of these may be granted exemption?

Mr. E. Brown

I have no power to grant exemption in the circumstances mentioned, but, where exceptional hardship would ensue, application may be made for postponement of the liability to be called up for service.

Mr. Thurtle

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, apart from cases of exceptional hardship, there is a very strong case for exemption on compassionate grounds of at least one member of a family of four; and will he give this matter his consideration?

Mr. Brown

I have no doubt whatever that the tribunal will take the facts into very serious consideration if application is made.
