HC Deb 15 February 1940 vol 357 cc920-1
10. Miss Ward

asked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the decision at present ruling prohibiting the erection of Government factories in the counties of Northumberland and Durham, he proposes to continue payment of travelling and removal expenses for people desirous of seeking employment in more fortunate areas?

Mr. E. Brown

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for East Rhondda (Mr. Mainwaring) on 13th February.

Miss Ward

Is my right hon. Friend going to alter the decision announced in the answer given to the hon. Member?

Mr. Brown

I think not. It seems to me to meet the case.

Mr. T. Smith

Is the household removal scheme still in operation? It was limited at one time to the Special Areas.

Mr. Brown

That is another issue. If the hon. Member will look at the answer, he will see that it does set out the amounts that were given.

Mr. Dalton

Does the right hon. Gentleman admit the suggestion in the hon. Lady's Question that it has been decided that no more Government factories are to be set up in these two counties?

Mr. Brown

Certainly not.
