§ 15. Mr. Lipsonasked the First Commissioner of Works whether local bricks are being used in the building of hutments on the outskirts of Cheltenham?
§ The First Commissioner of Works (Mr. Ramsbotham)Local bricks are being used for the foundations.
§ Mr. LipsonIn view of the fact that, in Cheltenham, there is a long-established firm which makes bricks, and of the necessity for restricting the use of petrol for unnecessary transport, would my right hon. Friend say why local bricks are not used?
§ Mr. RamsbothamThe erection of these hutments is being carried out on the basis of lump-sum contracts. The contractor has to provide bricks, and he provides those which are the cheapest and most satisfactory to meet the case. I understand that local bricks were dearer and that delivery could not be guaranteed.
§ Mr. LipsonDid the right hon. Gentleman or anybody in his Department verify those facts, and if not, has he any written evidence that local bricks were dearer?
§ Mr. RamsbothamI have no reason to doubt the accuracy of my information.
