HC Deb 08 February 1940 vol 357 cc398-9
55. Mr. Ede

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education, what steps are taken to ensure that reports on teachers undergoing probationary service are obtained before such teachers are called to the colours?

Mr. Lindsay

It has been the Board's practice to obtain reports upon probationary teaching service at the end of the year prescribed by the Code. I am considering whether it would be desirable and possible to modify this practice in view of the fact that a teacher may be called up for military service before the completion of that year; but, as the hon. Member was informed on the 7th December last, it is not proposed to count time spent by a teacher in the armed Forces as part of the probationary period.
