HC Deb 01 February 1940 vol 356 c1254
39. Mr. Dalton

asked the Minister of Health how many camps are to be established in South-West Durham; where they are to be situated; how many persons they are to accommodate; whether the plans are yet completed; and whether work on any such camps in this area has yet been begun?

Mr. Elliot

Under the present scheme no camps are being established in the County of Durham. Two camps are being built for the North-East Coast area, one at Bellingham and the other at Hexham, both in Northumberland. The camp at Hexham is completed, while the one at Bellingham is in an advanced stage of construction. Each camp is designed to accommodate some 350 persons, together with the necessary staff.

Mr. Dalton

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the very grave dissatisfaction in South-West Durham at the way in which, not for the first time, this area has been completely forgotten and neglected by the Government in spite of its suitability for these purposes and the large amount of local unemployment? Will he not look into the matter further?
