HC Deb 01 February 1940 vol 356 cc1250-1
64. Rear-Admiral Beamish

asked the Home Secretary whether he can now make a statement concerning the delays by local authorities in making payment for premises and vehicles impressed by them; and whether owners of such property are now being paid?

Sir J. Anderson

All necessary instructions in this matter were in the hands of local authorities some time ago and the need for prompt settlement has been emphasised. I cannot give particulars of the extent to which payments have been made, but if my hon. and gallant Friend would inform me of any particular cases that may have come to his notice where there appears to have been unreasonable delay, I will make inquiries.

Rear-Admiral Beamish

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware, for instance, that an important letter dated 27th November from a motor trade executive has not yet been replied to, and that in many quarters the inaction of his Department is giving the impression of deliberate deliberation?

Mr. J. Wilmot

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the very great hardship that is being occasioned by persons having to pay rent for premises the use of which is now debarred to them?

Sir J. Anderson

I said that all necessary instructions in the matter were in the hands of local authorities some time ago and that they have discretion to make payments.
