HC Deb 01 February 1940 vol 356 cc1249-50
62. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware of the dismissal of a branch official of the National Union of Public Employés, Mr. Morton, for writing to the Holborn air-raid precautions controller in that capacity; and whether he will instruct controllers throughout the country that the right to trade union organisation for air-raid precautions workers is inviolable?

Sir. J. Anderson

I am informed that Mr. Morton's services as an employe of the Holborn Borough Council were terminated by the Highways and Works Committee of the council for absence from work without permission and other breaches of discipline. In these circumstances the last part of the Question does not arise.

Mr. Gallacher

Is the Minister not aware that it was immediately after Mr. Morton had written in his capacity as a trade union official that he was dismissed from the service?

Sir J. Anderson

After, but not necessarily on account of.
