HC Deb 20 August 1940 vol 364 c1102
14. Mr. Lipson

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will arrange that the voluntary allotment made by a soldier to his dependants shall continue to be paid for the same period as the State allotment, when he is reported dead or missing, namely, for 13 weeks in the former instance and 17 in the latter, instead of for only four weeks as at present?

Mr. Eden

An alteration has already been effected by which a voluntary allotment made by a soldier to his dependants will be continued for a period of eight weeks after he is reported missing, instead of the four weeks which was hitherto the rule. I am, however, considering whether a further extension is called for, but the question concerns a number of other Departments, with whom consultation is necessary.

Mr. Lipson

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that decision, may I ask whether he is aware that if he can be generous with regard to voluntary allotments, it will remove a great many cases of hardship?

Mr. Eden

I am conscious of the difficulties.
