60. Mr. David Adamsasked the Home Secretary whether, in those districts, including reception areas, where there is insufficient protection for the population in the event of air raids, he will permit the erection of the Haldane bomb-proof shelters?
§ The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Home Security (Mr. Mabane)I assume that the hon. Member refers to a type of public shelter which has been recommended by the A.R.P. Co-ordinating Committee. Shelters of that type afford protection only against blast and splinters, but are designed to permit of their being strengthened subsequently if materials and labour become available in the large amounts involved. Shelters of this type are of necessity large and suitable occasions for their use on that account infrequent. While, therefore, as my right hon. Friend has stated, he will be prepared in suitable cases to approve their adoption, it seems clear that such cases will only be found in densely populated areas.
§ Commander Sir Archibald SouthbyCan my hon. Friend say whether, in view of the bombing of suburbs of London, there is any hope of a further distribution of Anderson shelters in the near future, as they are badly needed?
§ Mr. MabaneThat is another Question.
