HC Deb 20 August 1940 vol 364 cc1127-8
65. Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretray how many people are employed in the State breweries and the State-managed houses; and what are their rates of pay and hours of work?

Mr. Peake

On 1st July last, 797 industrial workers were employed in the State management districts; this number included workers at the brewery, the mineral water factory, and the wholesale spirit stores, tradesmen employed in the works department, and managers and domestic staff employed in hotels and public houses. Where their rates of pay are not prescribed by trade boards, or by agreements with the associations representing the employés concerned, they are fixed with reference to the wages current in the locality for similar work. The hours of work vary with the nature of the employment and are those usual in the various occupations.
