HC Deb 06 August 1940 vol 363 cc30-1
52. Mr. Mander

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action it is proposed to take with reference to the relation between sterling and the franc in future?

Sir K. Wood

The French franc is not quoted or dealt in in this country, and the Trading with the Enemy Act and Orders issued thereunder do not allow any person to transmit orders to pay or receive francs in Metropolitan France or to make sterling payments for account of residents in that territory.

Mr. Mender

Is it the case, then, that sterling and the French franc are no longer linked together and that the French franc is now linked to the dollar?

Mr. Craven-Ellis

May we take it from what my right hon. Friend says that the tripartite agreement is at an end?

Sir K. Wood

That is one of the matters which may call for consideration.
