HC Deb 06 August 1940 vol 364 c24
56. Sir William Wayland

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the present prohibitory price of beer and the inability of the men of His Majesty's Forces to afford to buy it out of their pay, he will be prepared to allow a rebate of 2d. per pint off the present duty to all Navy, Army and Air Force canteens?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

I regret that I am unable to accept my hon. Friend's proposal.

Sir W. Wayland

Is the Chancellor of the Exchequer aware that owing to the excessive Beer Duty three pints of ordinary beer to-day represent a day's pay of a soldier?
