HC Deb 01 August 1940 vol 363 c1372
3. Mr. Graham White

asked the Minister of Labour how many of the aliens entered upon the Supplementary Register of the Central Register have been interned; whether, on internment, their names were removed from the Register; and whether steps are now being taken to have them replaced on the Register in order that advantage may be taken of the service they are capable of rendering to the national cause?

Mr. Bevin

The number of persons on the Central Register of Aliens whose internment had up to a recent date been notified to that Register is 332. The names of interned persons are not removed from the Register, though they cannot, of course, be considered for employment so long as they remain interned.

Mr. White

Were adequate inquiries made as to the loyalty of these persons before they were put on the Central Register; and, if so, why were they interned at all?

Mr. Bevin

That is a question for the Home Secretary, not for me.
