HC Deb 30 April 1940 vol 360 cc529-30
38. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for War whether any steps have been taken respecting the formation of companies of the Pioneer Corps in association with particular boroughs; and what progress has been made respecting this possibility in the borough of Leyton?

Mr. Stanley

The question is under consideration. Some boroughs have been approached on the subject; others, including Leyton, will be approached in due course.

Mr. Sorensen

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when we are likely to hear about the raising of a Pioneer Corps in Leyton, seeing that numbers of men are anxious to join at an early date?

Mr. Stanley

I am glad to hear that, and I will certainly bring it to the notice of my advisers. We are only too anxious to start a corps in any borough where the prospects are likely to be so good.

Mr. Sorensen

May I point out that in fact communications have been sent to the Minister some time ago?

Mr. Duncan

How are the officers chosen for these corps? Have they to go through the ranks?

Mr. Stanley

A number of Reserve officers have been used for this purpose and officers of the Emergency Reserve.
