HC Deb 25 April 1940 vol 360 cc363-4
50. Mr. Wilfrid Roberts

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is now taking any fresh action to have a large acreage of inferior grassland ploughed up and re-seeded during the summer in order that its stock carrying capacity may be improved and so release other grassland to be ploughed for arable crops?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I can assure the hon. Member that the matter to which he refers has been considered and will be one of the matters to be discussed at the forthcoming consultations with the chairmen of the County War Agricultural Executive Committees in connection with the formulation of plans for the 1940–41 home food production campaign.

Mr. Roberts

May I ask why it requires further consultation and consideration, and why it is not possible to carry out a campaign for this purpose similar to that carried out for ploughing up grassland this year?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

We want to know the amount of land available for this kind of thing. I think it is as well to consult with the county chairmen and get their advice on this very important subject.
