HC Deb 17 April 1940 vol 359 c937
1. Mr. Mander

asked the Prime Minister whether he has any statement to make with reference to the publication of a White Book by the German Government on alleged Polish diplomatic documents, including some dealing with British policy?

The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler)

Copies of this German White Book do not yet appear to be available. From German Press reports it seems, however, to consist largely of records of conversations alleged to have taken place between United States and Polish representatives. At the end of March, the United States Secretary of State issued a statement that he and the State Department did not give the slightest credence to these alleged conversations, which did not represent in any way at any time the thought or policy of the United States Government.

Mr. Mander

Is there not reason to think that, in accordance with precedent, most of these documents were forged?

Mr. Butler

I can only say what I have said, namely, that this does not represent, in any way or in any manner, the thought or policy of the United States.
