HC Deb 16 April 1940 vol 359 c792
52. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any information as to the value of the Danish and Norwegian gold reserves; and as to whether the Germans have seized any part thereof?

Sir J. Simon

According to the latest returns, the gold holdings of the National Banks of Denmark and Norway amount to round about £13,000,000 and £18,000,000 or £19,000,000, respectively. I have no precise information what amounts of the gold are held outside the two countries or as to the second part of the Question.

Sir William Davison

Have not the German Government publicly announced that they have only gone into Denmark for the protection of that country from marauders?
