HC Deb 27 September 1939 vol 351 c1325
79. Mr. Leslie

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of past experience in the breakdown of voluntary arrangements for early closing of shops, he has yet decided to issue a general closing order in the interests of national economy, the saving of light and fuel, and to enable assistants to reach their homes within reasonable hours by releasing them within 15 minutes after the closing hour?

Sir J. Anderson

I have been in consultation with some of the principal trade associations concerned and with some of the larger local authorities. The necessary inquiries are nearly completed and I hope to be able to reach a decision next week.
