HC Deb 26 October 1939 vol 352 cc1571-2
51. Mr. Denville

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the undesirable nature of many bottle parties, he will take powers to close these establishments?

Sir J. Anderson

The police keep a careful watch on these parties, which purport to be private gatherings, with a view to taking action whenever evidence is available of a breach of the law. I know of no new developments which necessitate the introduction of special legislation on this subject at the present time.

Mr. Denville

While thanking the right hon. Gentleman for his reply, and knowing the tremendous job that he has undertaken, might I be permitted to ask whether it is not possible, if evidence is supplied to him, for him to close down under the Defence of the Realm Act these establishments? [HON. MEMBERS: "Why?"] Because they are being conducted at present by aliens.

Sir J. Anderson

I know of no regulations under which I can take such action.
