§ 1. Mr. Gallacherasked the Minister of Labour whether he has any further in formation regarding the case of Mr. H. Burnstone, of Southampton, who was suspended by the insurance officer for refusing employment under his trade union rate of pay?
§ The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Brown)No, Sir. As I stated in my previous reply, unemployment benefit was not suspended.
§ Mr. GallacherIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that this man still insists that he was refused benefit; is he further aware that the man produced his birth certificate, which shows his name is Burnstone, and can he say where he got the name he used in connection with this man on the occasion when he answered my earlier question?
§ Mr. BrownThe answer is that the facts do not correspond with the man's statement. He was not refused benefit. We have been trying to trace the man and we have had great difficulty in finding him, because, as the records show, he has travelled a good deal. Even to-day I find that he has now removed from Southampton Docks to Stepney. He was employed at one time by Bernsteins, but it has been very difficult to trace this case at all.
§ Mr. KirkwoodIs it the case that this man had his benefit stopped because he refused to take a job at other than trade union rates?
