HC Deb 17 October 1939 vol 352 c686
72. Mr. Mathers

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many schools in reception areas have been commandeered for use as air-raid precautions posts of different descriptions and decontamination centres; whether he is aware of the serious objections to such schools being so used; and whether he will give instructions to cease this practice where other suitable places are available?

Mr. Colville

The number of schools in reception areas in Scotland that are being used in whole or in part for air-raid precautions purposes is 135. I understand, however, that in most cases this occupation will not normally interfere with the use of the premises for education. I am not aware that any schools have been taken over against the wish of the education authority concerned when other premises suitable for A.R.P. purposes were available, but if the hon. Member has any case in mind and will let me have particulars I will look into the matter.

Mr. Stephen

Is it the policy of the Government that elementary education in Scotland is to be suspended for the duration of the war?

Mr. Colville

There is another question on the Paper relating to that subject.
