HC Deb 12 October 1939 vol 352 cc517-8
51. Colonel Baldwin-Webb

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the existing emergency and the need for limiting responsibilities, he will continue the long-standing arrangement between his factory department and the National Federation of Meat Traders' Association waiving registration of those sausage-making premises in which mechanical-driven machinery is in operaton, provided such machinery is used for a limited period of hours each week?

Sir J. Anderson

Whether any particular butcher's shop is a factory within the meaning of the Factories Act could only be decided by the Courts, but as at present advised I see no reason to alter the existing departmental practice, to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers, as to the circumstances in which the Act is treated as applying.
