HC Deb 11 October 1939 vol 352 cc320-1
36. Sir Annesley Somerville

asked the Attorney-General whether he is aware that the Solicitors Bill, after having been reported upon by a Joint Committee of both Houses of Parliament and recommitted, was withdrawn on 3rd October; and will he inquire of the Law Society whether, in view of further losses inflicted on the public by solicitors convicted of fraud in the criminal courts since the Bill was introduced, the Law Society will prefer that Parliament should take into its own hands the protection of the public against fraud by solicitors, or whether the society will produce a Bill and publish it without delay?

The Attorney-General

This Bill was withdrawn by the Law Society, as it was felt that there was no prospect of its passing its remaining stages this Session. The Law Society are anxious to re-introduce a Bill, as amended by the Joint Select Committee, at the earliest practicable moment.
