HC Deb 11 October 1939 vol 352 cc315-6
26. Mr. Boulton

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will be prepared to review the scheme for widening the roads in the Islands and Highlands of Scot land with a view to abandoning this expensive undertaking, except those portions nearing completion, in the interests of national economy?

Captain Wallace

In consultation with my right hon. Friends the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Minister of Labour, I am carrying out a review of all road schemes in Great Britain, including those to which my hon. Friend refers. I explained the principles on which this review is being conducted in the answers which I gave on 26th September and 4th October to the hon. Members for Chatham (Captain Plugge) and Bilston (Mr. Hannah). I am sending my hon. Friend copies of these replies.

Mr. Boulton

Could my right hon. and gallant Friend state the cost of this scheme?

Captain Wallace

I could not do that without notice. There are a considerable number of these schemes.

Mr. Leonard

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman bear in mind that Scotland will not have any national economy at all unless he sees to the completion of those roads?
