HC Deb 11 October 1939 vol 352 cc338-9
68. Mr. Thurtle

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is contemplating the issue of free travelling vouchers to soldiers stationed a considerable distance from their homes in order that they may, when granted suitable leave, pay a visit to their homes?

Sir V. Warrender

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for South Cardiff (Colonel A. Evans) and the hon. Member for Deptford (Mr. Green) on Tuesday, 26th September.

Mr. Thurtle

Is the Minister aware that some of these men are 200 or 300 miles away from their homes and that it is quite impossible for them out of their pay to find money for their journeys?

Mr. Garro Jones

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that some of these men who live in my constituency are more than 600 miles from their homes, and that for them to pay half-fare imposes a crippling charge for months on the resources of the soldiers? Will he make some special arrangement for those whose homes are more than 100 miles away?

Viscountess Astor

Is my hon. Friend aware that he cannot do this without considering the sailors?

Sir V. Warrender

It is quite clear that any concession made could not be limited to soldiers alone.

Mr. Gallacher

Is the Minister aware that in many cases the parents have to have up and pay the fares of soldiers who go home on leave?

Mr. Lipson

Could the Minister ask the heads of the other Service Departments to see whether something could be done in this matter?
