HC Deb 11 October 1939 vol 352 cc335-6
62. Mr. Hepworth

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that many Territorials in Yorkshire are still without greatcoats; and what steps he is taking to remedy this defect?

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Sir Victor Warrender)

As has already been stated, it is hoped that an adequate supply of greatcoats will be available next month. In the meantime, authority has been given for the local purchase of overcoats where necessary.

Mr. Alexander

Why does not the War Office make full use of the machinery they have for making greatcoats, and get them out: at an earlier date?

Sir V. Warrender

We do not make greatcoats in the War Office.

Colonel Baldwin-Webb

Will the hon. Gentleman consider placing orders with small firms?

Sir V. Warrender

I will pass the suggestion on to my right hon. Friend.

Sir J. Nall

Does the hon. Member realise that this wicked shortage in greatcoats is due to the premature transfer of clothing supply from the Territorial associations to the Ordnance Department? Why were not the old channels of supply continued?
