HC Deb 11 October 1939 vol 352 c340
72. Mr. Higgs

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that considerable dissatisfaction exists due to the prohibition of the use of well-known public codes; and will he be prepared to remove the restrictions at an early date?

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. Mabane)

The introduction of censorship necessitated the prohibition of the use of code in overseas telegrams. The inconvenience of this prohibition is understood. I understand that the question whether the use of certain codes could be permitted, under suitable safeguards, is at present under consideration. I hope that it will be found possible to introduce an arrangement of this kind in the near future.

Mr. Higgs

Will the Minister allow the address to be put in code forthwith?

Mr. Mabane

This prohibition of code addresses applies, of course, to overseas telegrams, and at present that prohibition cannot be relaxed.
