HC Deb 09 October 1939 vol 352 c2
3. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister whether it is the policy of His Majesty's Government to publish, in due course of time and jointly with the French Government, a specific statement of war aims, based on the principles already enunciated by His Majesty's Government?

The Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain)

His Majesty's Government and the French Government are in complete accord as to the purposes for which we entered the war and these purposes have more than once been already stated by both Governments. No doubt as time goes on both Governments will consider whether their war aims should be stated in more specific form. In any case the hon. and learned Member may take it that any such statement would be made only by agreement between the two Governments.

Miss Rathbone

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is a very strong and growing demand in the country for a more specific statement of war aims—[HON. MEMBERS: "No!"]—as the best answer to Herr Hitler's speech?
