HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 c1940
44. Mr. Dunn

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he has given consideration to the question of instituting automatic, pressure-controlled, quick-shutting doors on all submarines in the Navy, in view of the fact that the collision bulk-head doors on the submarine "Triumph," which is similar in construction to the "Thetis," has 16 butterfly clips on each door, each of which must be hand-manipulated, and that such an arrangement is out of date and is giving rise to considerable anxiety and alarm?

The Financial Secretary to the Admiralty (Mr. Shakespeare)

The fitting of automatic pressure-controlled quick-shutting doors in His Majesty's submarines has been considered and found impracticable. Hand-operated quick-acting doors are fitted throughout in all new construction submarines, and doors of this type will be substituted for the clip doors in His Majesty's Submarine "Triumph" and other submarines whenever possible.
