HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 c1941
59. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in view ofthe repeated assertion over the German official wireless that the aircraft-carrier "Ark Royal" was successfully bombed by German aircraft, in spite of British official denials, he will consider inviting neutral naval attachés to inspect the ship?

Mr. Shakespeare

The hon. Member will have seen the reports in the Press of the recent visit of the United States Naval Attaché, Captain Kirk, to the fleet base, where he attended divine service in His Majesty's Ship "Ark Royal." No further demonstration of the falsity of the German assertion would appear to be necessary.

Mr. Henderson

May I ask the date of the visit?

Mr. Shakespeare

It was at the week-end.
