HC Deb 03 October 1939 vol 351 c1801
31. Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will take steps to secure that cigarettes and tobacco sent from this country to the British troops in France are admitted free of duty?

Sir V. Warrender

Yes, Sir.

Sir J. Lucas

Will the hon. Gentleman say whether this applies to small parcels or only to tobacco in bulk?

Sir V. Warrender

This applies to all tobacco which is issued free to troops and which is not subject to duty. As regards small packages of tobacco and cigarettes going to France being free of duty in France, that matter is being taken up at the present time.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Will the hon. Gentleman also see that the tobacco which is sent is worth smoking?

Mr. R. Gibson

Will the hon. Gentleman see that packages can be sent to France, at British inland postal rates?
