HC Deb 03 October 1939 vol 351 cc1812-3
61. Sir A. Knox

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the amount of public funds granted to the organisation now installed at Balliol College, Oxford?

Captain Crookshank

The Royal Institute of International Affairs have undertaken certain services for the Foreign Office and other Departments during the war. These include a digest of the overseas Press and the preparation of material of various kinds. This work and the removal to Oxford will entail extra expense which the institute cannot meet, and it is proposed to ask Parliament to vote a grant. I cannot yet say the necessary amount. The matter is under active examination.

Sir A. Knox

Is this work done by the Ministry of Information? What is the Foreign Office doing? Do they not read the foreign newspapers?
