HC Deb 03 October 1939 vol 351 cc1814-5
68. Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he is aware that the ration of 25 gallons for medical practitioners in Scotland is inadequate, in view of the fact that many are undertaking the practice of colleagues who are on service with His Majesty's Forces in addition to their own practice and in evacuee reception areas they are being called upon to do more work consequent upon the increase in population; and if he will increase the ration to medical practitioners and so enable them to carry out their responsibilities to patients?

The Secretary for Mines (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave on 28th September to the hon. Member for the Isle of Ely (Mr. de Rothschild), of which I am sending him a copy.

70. Mr. Salt

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he is aware that the petrol ration allotted to commercial travellers is in many cases only 25 per cent, of their normal requirements; and whether he will consider increasing this amount since otherwise many businesses will be unable to carry on, with considerable hardship to their employes and loss to the State?

Mr. Lloyd

The whole question of supplies of petrol for commercial travellers is under consideration in consultation with their organisations and the other interests concerned. While I am anxious to arrive at a proper decision in this matter I must emphasise that economy in the use of petrol is essential.

Commander Sir Archibald Southby

In view of the great urgency of this matter, will my hon. Friend expedite the investigations which are being made?

Mr. Lloyd

Yes, Sir. I am receiving a deputation from the commercial travellers this week.
