HC Deb 03 October 1939 vol 351 cc1794-5
12. Mr. David Adams

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that candles, which are an essential commodity of working miners, have been advanced in price in County Durham by 75 per cent, since the outbreak of war; and what steps are being taken to protect these consumers against this exploitation?

Mr. Stanley

My attention has been drawn to several cases where the price of candles has been increased and one of these related to the Durham area. Inquiries are being made of the firm concerned. With regard to the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for Leigh (Mr. Tinker) on 28th September.

Mr. Adams

Is the Minister aware that a deputation of working miners waited upon me on this subject and stated that unless they could get candles at a reasonableprice, they would have to give up their employment?

Mr. Stanley

I was not aware of that, but when the matter was brought to my notice, I got into communication speedily with the firm, and I will let the hon. Member know the results of my inquiry.

Mr. Hicks

Are we to understand that the miners have to purchase their own candles for working?

Mr. Stanley

That is not a point for me. What I am looking into is the question of the price of the candles.

Mr. George Griffiths

Is it not time you snuffed the profiteers out?

Mr. Stanley

That is the object of a Bill which I hope soon to introduce and on which I hope I shall have the hon. Member's co-operation.

Mr. Griffiths

You will.
