HC Deb 30 November 1939 vol 355 c218
9. Mr. Rhys Davies

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that some university students are allowed a postponement of their calling-up for military service to complete their studies in the sciences, but that the same facilities are not granted to art students; and will he take steps to ensure that both categories of students are treated alike?

Mr. E. Brown

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to the right hon. Member for Kirkcaldy (Mr. Kennedy) on 23rd November.

Mr. Davies

Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind the very severe hardship that this imposes on students, especially those who are in their last year of education at a university?

Mr. Edmund Harvey

Would it not be possible to have a general arrangement to postpone the calling up of all students who are in their last year and within a few months of their examinations?

Mr. Brown

If the hon. Member will look at the answer, he will see what is being done.

Mr. Harvey

I have seen it.
