HC Deb 30 November 1939 vol 355 c245
59. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will be in a position to make a report on the inquiry into the question of increased old age pensions before the Christmas Recess?

58. Mr. Vyvyan Adams

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when ťhe House of Commons may expect an adjustment in the rates of old age pensions consequent upon the current inquiries of His Majesty's Government into a matter which is causing widespread anxiety and distress?

61. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can now make a statement on the investigation that has been conducted into the proposal for an increase in old age and widows' pensions?

64. Mr. Davidson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what progress is being made by the committee inquiring about old age pensions; and whether a report will be made in the near future?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon)

I explained the present position in regard to the investigation into old age pensions during the course of the Debate yesterday, and have nothing now to add to what I said then.

Mr. Gallacher

In view of the fact that the Chancellor stated that the original idea was to take about eight weeks and that two weeks were spent in investigations before the inquiry was dropped, would it not be possible for him in the time at his disposal to make a report before Christmas?

Sir J. Simon

I shall do my best to hasten it.
