HC Deb 30 November 1939 vol 355 c227
26. Mr. McGovern

asked the Home Secretary the nature of the inquiries made into the recent allegations of insulting conduct by Air Raid Warden Lyle of Renfrew; why no inquiries or statement made by Provost Michie or by Mr. and Mrs. S. Ward were asked for; and who were the parties insulted and threatened by Air Raid Warden Lyle?

Sir J. Anderson

The report I received at the time of the hon. Member's previous Question on 17th October led me to conclude that he had been misinformed and that there were no grounds for any further investigation on my part. If the hon. Member has further information and will communicate it to me, I shall be ready to bring it to the notice of the responsible local authority.

Mr. McGovern

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether he is aware that although he stated there was no truth in the allegation of the man and woman that they were very badly insulted, they were not consulted; and is he aware that Provost Michie, as air-raid warden, issued a letter to the Press that there were no grounds of truth in the allegation, and that no investigation had been made?

Sir J. Anderson

I have to rely in this matter on the statement made to me with the authority of the local body concerned. As I have said, if there is any other information which the hon. Member has, I will communicate again with the local authority.
