asked the Home Secretary whether local authorities have power to make suitable arrangements for the accommodation of nearby residents in free Anderson shelters in cases where, owing to evacuation and other causes, such surplus accommodation is available?

Yes, Sir. Local authorities may in such cases give a direction under Regulation 23 of the Defence Regulations which will have the effect of making the surplus accommodation available to shelter persons not belonging to the household.
