12. Mr. Price

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that Germany is undertaking a trade drive in the Balkans, and, especially, is interested in getting monopoly control of Rumanian oil; and whether any steps have been taken by His Majesty's Government to counteract this move?

Mr. Stanley

The answer to both parts of the question is in the affirmative, but it is clearly not in the national interest to make public statements about these matters.

Have we purchased any Rumanian oil?

Mr. Stanley

I cannot add anything to what I have said.

Mr. Mander

Will the right hon. Gentleman say whether this is a matter that falls wholly within the sphere of his Department, and whether he is able to give decisions on it?

Mr. Stanley

It does not come wholly within the sphere of my Department, but there is very close co-operation between the Departments concerned.
